Our story began with natural materials and a fascination with sheepskin, which eventually led us to making handcrafted sheepskin rugs.

Where It Started

Norkley began with a fascination for natural sheepskin and the way it changes the feeling of a space.

Working with the material came first. The rugs came later.

We spent a long time looking at different hides, their textures, colours, pile lengths and natural shapes. Some were soft and dense, some had longer fibres, some had markings and variations that could never be reproduced exactly. Instead of seeing these differences as something to correct, we started seeing them as part of what made sheepskin interesting.

That process gradually led us to making handcrafted sheepskin rugs, and then to exploring what else could be made from the same kind of natural materials.

There was no complicated plan behind it. We were simply interested in the material and wanted to see where it could take us.

We Like Things Natural

Sheepskin does not come from a factory mould. Every hide has its own character. The colour can vary slightly. The pile can be denser in one area and softer in another. The shape is never perfectly identical, and small natural differences are part of the material itself. We don't try to make every piece look exactly the same. Instead, we select the hides carefully and work with their individual qualities. A beautiful piece of sheepskin already has plenty to say. Our job is not to cover that up, but to give it the right form and let the material remain visible. This is also why we are drawn to natural materials more generally. They bring texture and variation that manufactured surfaces often try to imitate. For us, those small differences are not imperfections. They are what make a piece feel real.

Making Things Our Way

As we worked with sheepskin, we became increasingly interested in texture, colour and shape.

We experimented with different qualities and combinations, from soft Merino sheepskin to longer-haired mohair and other natural textures. Some ideas stayed simple. Others became more unusual. Some worked immediately; others were taken apart and started again.

We still work this way.

A rug does not have to follow a trend to be interesting. Sometimes the best result comes from a particular hide, an unexpected combination of textures, or a shape that simply feels right.

Our handcrafted sheepskin rugs are made from individually selected hides and finished by hand. That means the finished piece retains some of the character it had as a natural material rather than becoming something completely uniform.

MORE THAN RUGS

Rugs were where we started, but they were never meant to be the end of the story. The same interest in natural texture has led us to cushions, throws and other pieces for the interior. Each one gives us another way to work with softness, colour and the natural character of the material. We don't want everything to look like it came from the same mould. A room can have several pieces from Norkley without everything matching perfectly. We prefer combinations that feel considered but relaxed.

Today

Today, Norkley is a collection of rugs, cushions, throws and other pieces made from carefully selected natural materials. We continue to explore different sheepskin qualities, textures, colours and forms. Some pieces are quiet and simple. Others have a stronger presence. What connects them is the material itself. We still begin with the same question: What can we make from this? And we still believe the answer is usually better when we let the material have some say. Make something good. Keep it natural. Let the material do some of the talking.
